Nine amateur photographers from the UK are among the shortlisted candidates in Sony?s first World Photography Awards.

As reported on Tuesday, amateurs accounted for more than one third of the 70,575 entries.

Named today, the UK shortlisted candidates in the Abstract category are: Simon Brown, Ronya Galka, Kambiz Kashani and Martin Kharumwa.

In the Fashion section the UK?s Roy Palmer was shortlisted.

Meanwhile, Tim Alban and Kerry Grainger swept honours for the UK in the Music/Performance category.

And, in the Science section, Amy Bramley and Matthew Thompson from the UK were among the finalists.

However, UK amateurs missed out in the Architecture, Nature, Portraiture and Sport categories.

Each shortlisted photographer stands a chance of bagging the top prize of $5,000 cash, along with the title Sony World Photography Awards Amateur Photographer of the Year.

The amateur title will be announced on 7 April and the award presented at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, France, on 24 April.

The judging panel included Amateur Photographer Editor Damien Demolder.
